In reality, a proper treatment plan is important for a successful treatment of mental illness. Because every person is different and has different strengths and needs, every person with a mental illness needs an individual treatment plan that is suitable for them.
- The most important aspect of a treatment plan is to have support from the treatment team that may include the doctor, mental health care provider, nurse, family members and friends. It is necessary that a patient has confidence in the knowledge and skills of the treatment team. It is the responsibility of the treatment team to understand the needs and requirements of the patients and freely communicate with them, work on improving their inherent strengths. The doctor should have an open and honest discussion with the patient. Depending on the discussion with the patient, a proper treatment plan can be chalked out.
- A good treatment plan always includes two fundamental treatment options known as psychotherapy and medication. Psychotherapy or “talk therapy” involves mental counseling from a therapist or a counselor. Prime objective of this therapy is to help in modifying behavioral or emotional patterns that might interfere during the recovery. In case of mild to moderate mental illness, psychotherapy is sufficient for a complete recovery.
- Next important part of a treatment plan is the choice of medication. Anti-depressants are the most favored medication for mental illness. Apart from this, there are various other types of drugs useful for treating mentally ill patients. However, any medication doesn’t completely solve all the problems. One can have relief from the symptoms.
Medication must be supported by other treatment methods that can have a positive effect on mental illnesses. However, it is important to notify the doctor before undergoing any of these treatments.
